Ok, if you promise not to say anything to Linda (I know that you commented with her the synonyms for drunk…), there was something interesting we used to do in the beginning of every class: she would give us little pieces of paper with vocabulary and expressions from the previous lesson, and we would have to explain it in turns to the other people in the group/ table. We do something similar, but not quite as fun…
Ahhem. Watching movies and talking about them afterwards was always great for my english (at least I like to believe so). Jo and Caroline used to do it once a term, I think.
Ah bad suggestion, but I have a terrible memory (and hate writing exercises).
We did a lot of debating on Tim's class. That helped me a lot in terms of speaking.
mmm ... rather than explaining vocabulary, i think it is more useful/important to use it properly. i have found in the past that students know vocabulary, but when they use it, they use it wrong...
i love doing films as well - but i have to be careful to follow the syllabus. in term 3 we could do some tv programmes ( a bit shorter) you guys could choose... we could do Dr House !
debating or arguing ? a good idea, but ... !!!
Graham, what a better way of using vocabulary than debating? For instance, two weeks ago, when we started the theme Nature Vs Nurture we talked a bit about that, and gave our personal opinions. That's the kind of debate I was refering to...
I vote Dr House!
Yeah, TV shows would probably be better. I have some I can bring to class. House, The Office, Six Feet Under, Lost, My Name is Earl, etc. House is probably the best choice but I usually get lost when they start with the medical jargon.
Debating is excellent as long as we have something interesting to talk about and truly believe the words coming out of our mouth (unlike those damn exams...).
I was a Linda student too and I can say that Ana Carina’s suggestion is really great.
I believe reading is also an important aspect of learning, so here goes an idea which I am not sure it will please everyone: one year in Linda’s class we started reading a book (1984 by George Orwell) and for a few weeks she would give us 1 or 2 chapters to read during that week. Then in the next class, for about 30 min. we would discuss it, share vocab. and do exercises about it. Those who were fond of reading and had the time during the week to do it really enjoyed the experience.
