what is everyone up to ?

hello people, how are you ? are you all working or are you on holiday ?

luckily i am on holiday. am having a good time and bad time. I cycled to viana do alentejo a few days ago which was very nice. We passed through Troia and Alcacer do Sal - lovely. Today i have waited at the financas for an hour and got nowhere. They have a senha system, but then deal with whoever walks up to the counter first ! then i went to the bank to reduce my spread only to be told they would charge me 2oo euros just to look at it !!! sometimes i love this country, but not today !!! if you are on holiday please post what you are up to...

ps Pedro and Lecia have a cunning plan that they were going to put up - but i don't see it ? are you out there ?

On democracy

I often come accross with the following expression: "That 's why this country does not evolve!!" to criticize the government and whoever is considered to be a fat cat. But evolution can only take place if it starts off with our actions. Every single one of us can change something.
I say, considering we are lucky enough to live in a democracy, it is in our hands to change whatever we think it is not right.
For instance, there are a couple of things that get on my nerves and that i wish i could change, namely:
Cars parked on the pavement preventing people from walking there, and what is more nerve racking is to see people on wheel chairs forced to wheel down or up the street, along with the cars!!!
Pavements are generally not wide enough for people, and when they are, we constantly bump into traffic signs, lampposts and if we're unlucky, we can even step on some dog turd along the way .

I say, let's start a civilian movement to fight for quality of life in Lisbon and elsewhere. Let's call it pedestrian rage!

BOOKS

Guys

talking of silly marketing days, coming up is book day !! the lovely ladies in the BC library have asked if we could talk about good books on our blog. Of course ! i smiled sweetly ( i am a sook ).

So if you wouldn't mind, can you please post some comments about the last book you read, or a good book you have read, or even a lousy book you have read.

so to start the ball rolling i recently read a book called "stuart - a life backwards". In chapter 1, stuart committed suicide and threw himself in front of a train (this is a true story i should say). then in each chapter it tries to work out what drove him to this act - the last chapter talked about his childhood. It wasn't a great book to be honest, but i thought it was a nice idea the way the author worked backwards in time. it was in fact a very depressing book, and shows how mucked up some peoples lives really are...

all comments warmly welcomed - oh and i have the vicar of dibley dvd already ! bet you can't wait

Woman's day

Last Friday I was bored to death listening to my teacher of Translation’s History and Criticism talking about the little importance of translators in the Antiquity when the mate sitting next to me nudged me in the arm.

She was fuming because her boyfriend had forgotten to give her a present the day before. She gave him the hint that on 8 March something important is celebrated but he couldn’t guess. Apparently he also suffers from the syndrome of forgetting-all-important-dates as almost every man I know! So she reminded him that it was woman's day and asked him if he had bought her a present but the answer was negative. But what really made her hit the roof was his inopportune remark: - Why should I give you something if there isn't a men's day? In fact in some countries there is a men's day as I checked in Wikipedia, but that’s another story. My answer to my friend's boyfriend is: - Men's day is everyday. They don't need a specific day to be celebrated.

Woman's day was created so as to celebrate women because during centuries they were considered as inferior human beings in comparison to men who were the intelligent, the brave and the strong ones. Their abilities were undervalued and they were seen as sex objects and ornaments. As time went by men finally understood that apart from being housewives, taking care of the children, gossiping about neighbours and going shopping, women are far more intelligent and useful to the society as they have grasped.

But there are some women who think that women's day is a way of discrimination. If men and women have equal rights why to make the difference between them? What do you reckon?
