Guys
talking of silly marketing days, coming up is book day !! the lovely ladies in the BC library have asked if we could talk about good books on our blog. Of course ! i smiled sweetly ( i am a sook ).
So if you wouldn't mind, can you please post some comments about the last book you read, or a good book you have read, or even a lousy book you have read.
so to start the ball rolling i recently read a book called "stuart - a life backwards". In chapter 1, stuart committed suicide and threw himself in front of a train (this is a true story i should say). then in each chapter it tries to work out what drove him to this act - the last chapter talked about his childhood. It wasn't a great book to be honest, but i thought it was a nice idea the way the author worked backwards in time. it was in fact a very depressing book, and shows how mucked up some peoples lives really are...
all comments warmly welcomed - oh and i have the vicar of dibley dvd already ! bet you can't wait

I quite like mystery/crime solving stories. And the last book I read was “Mystic River” (you probably know the story because of the film). Anyway, for those who don’t know it, the plot it is about 3 men (Sean, Jimmy and Dave) who were friends in their childhood, but when Dave is taken away and is molested (although he manages to escape) their lives as well as their friendship is changed forever.
The main story happens 25 years later, when Jimmy’s teenage daughter is brutally murdered and that fact brings the 3 of them closer again. Until the murderer is found, Jimmy will want to do justice by his own hands; Dave will try to hide why he arrived home covered in blood the same night Jimmy’s daughter is killed and Sean - who is a detective - is assigned to solve that horrible crime. The story will give a lot of twists, and I confess I was a little bit disappointed when we finally discovered the motive of the crime as well as the assassin's identity.
At the moment I’m reading “A Florentine Revenge” which is about an American woman – Celia Donnelly - who moves to Florence at the same time a crime happens: a small tourist girl goes missing and a few days later she is found dead in the town’s river. Few years later the crime remains unsolved. I can’t tell you any more details as this point was as far as I went on reading.
the last book i read, which pleased me was Mrs Dalloway by Virginia Wolf. There's also a film based on the novel, which, i must say, is rather good. The story of the book is very simple. In fact it is the life of a rich woman in the beginning of the 20th century who hasn't done much in her life.
What made me like this book was the way it is written and how easily Virginia Wolf shifts from the description of an event to a simple thought and then takes us to the past.
Loved it and want to read it again.
By the way, in case you're interested, there's a film called the hours in which Virginia Wolf, played by Nicole Kidman, is writing precisely that novel.
It's a great film!
I just finished reading a book today whilst waiting for an appointment at the dentist. It's called "The Code Book". The author, Simon Singh, spent two years of his life collecting proof and evidence about anything related to cryptography. I liked the book because I learnt a LOT with it! From ciphers generals used during many wars, passing throw the famous Cesar’s cipher and landing on quantum encryption, this book misses nothing. However, my favorite part is the story of how the English sussed out a way to break the enigma...etc.
Another book I quite liked was written by Maquiavel, "The Prince", some of his ideas make me nauseous but it's kind of funny to see Napoleon's comments...
Overall: if you are into IT buy/borrow from me (begging included) "The Code Book", I promise you won't be disappointed. If you are really nice to me, we can work out some sort of bundle agreement including both “Maquiavel” and “The Code Book”. Nice package hum?
GUYS
if you are into books (i'm not really) the people downstairs in the library have set up a blog ! wonder where they got that idea from ! it is called readinggrouplisbon where i think they will recommend books to read .... check it out
I used to be a bookworm. I still love to read, I just lack time to do it. Currently, I'm reading a book by Audrey Niffenegger, "The Time Traveler's Wife", which tells us the story of a very special couple: Henry has a genetic malfunction and for no apparent reason he travels in time back and forth during is life span. So he meets his future wife when she's 6 and he is 40, and end up marrying when he is 30 and Clare is 22. He is often in a pickle, because when he travels in time, he reappears naked in the most common places you can imagine: a park, a museum... you name it.It's quite fun and interesting. I can't wait to finish it.
